Penis Size Statistics
Comprehensive data from systematic reviews and clinical studies — with notes on methodology and why self-report data inflates averages.
Normal Distribution of Erect Length
Erect penis length follows a normal (bell curve) distribution with mean 13.12 cm and SD 1.66 cm. Approximately 68% of men fall within one standard deviation (11.46–14.78 cm), and 95% within two standard deviations (9.80–16.44 cm).

Why Self-Reported Studies Run Higher
Studies relying on self-report consistently report higher averages than those using clinical measurement. The gap is typically 1–2 cm — a predictable outcome of social desirability bias.

Erect Girth Percentiles
Girth (circumference measured at midshaft) follows a normal distribution with mean 11.66 cm and SD 1.10 cm.
| Percentile | Girth (cm) | Girth (in) |
|---|---|---|
| 5th | 9.94 | 3.91 |
| 10th | 10.37 | 4.08 |
| 25th | 11.05 | 4.35 |
| 50th | 11.66 | 4.59 |
| 75th | 12.23 | 4.82 |
| 90th | 12.89 | 5.07 |
| 95th | 13.25 | 5.21 |

Common Claims vs. Evidence
| Claim | Evidence | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Shoe size predicts penis size | Shah & Christopher (2002) — no statistically significant correlation found | False |
| Race determines size | No large-scale clinical study has established this. Existing cross-country data is methodologically weak | Unsupported |
| Height correlates with size | Weak positive correlation found in some studies (r ≈ 0.2), but clinically meaningless | Weak |
| Average is 6 inches | Veale et al. (2015) meta-analysis: mean erect length 5.17 in (13.12 cm) | Overstated |
| Flaccid size predicts erect size | Positive correlation but with high variance. 'Growers' vs 'showers' are well-documented phenotypes | Partial |
Clinical Definitions
Clinically defined as stretched penile length below 7 cm in adults after hormonal stimulation. Affects approximately 0.6% of men. Requires clinical diagnosis.
Abnormally large genital size, typically associated with hormonal disorders such as precocious puberty or adrenal tumour. Not simply 'large' within normal distribution.
In Veale et al. (2015), the 5th–95th percentile erect length range is 10.53–16.00 cm (4.15–6.30 in). Clinical treatment is generally not indicated within this range.
